IBM Reveals World’s First Sub-1 Nanometer Chip
IBM scientists have achieved a milestone in chip design by creating a processor built at 0.7 nanometers (7 angstroms). The approach uses a new “nanostack” 3D transistor architecture, vertically layering transistors to increase transistor density.
Architecture and Performance
The design allows different layers to use different materials, enabling optimization of speed and energy efficiency. Early testing reported up to 50% faster performance or 70% lower energy use compared with IBM’s previous 2 nm technology.
Why It Matters
The work pushes semiconductor scaling toward the atomic scale and explores how three-dimensional transistor architectures and heterogeneous materials can support continued advances in computing, AI, cloud infrastructure, and other high-performance applications.
