First Room-Temperature Quantum Statistical Metacrystal

Physicists led by Louisiana State University engineered a room-temperature quantum material called a quantum statistical plasmonic metacrystal. Using focused ion beams to carve microscopic slits (acting as meta-atoms) into a gold thin film on glass, the material distinguishes subtle quantum statistical differences in incoming light waves and routes distinct quantum states along separate pathways.

IIT Delhi Team Builds India’s First University-Developed Indigenous Micro-GPU

New Delhi: A research team at IIT Delhi has developed a working micro-Graphics Processing Unit (micro-GPU), marking what the researchers describe as the first demonstrable indigenously designed micro-GPU developed at an Indian university. The project was carried out by M.Tech students Nammi Akash and M. Ravi Teja, under the supervision of Prof. Jayadeva and Prof. Kaushik Saha of the Electrical Engineering Department. The team implemented a programmable graphics-processing architecture in RTL and demonstrated it on a Spartan-7 FPGA. The technology is intended for embedded applications where compact and affordable graphics processing is required, including industrial displays, e-rickshaw dashboards, navigation terminals, and educational devices. The researchers are now exploring a larger 8–16-core graphics architecture, along with a compiler and software toolchain, and are considering a future ASIC implementation using a 65 nm semiconductor process. The development could provide a foundation for further research into locally designed graphics hardware for embedded and resource-constrained applications.

Grain Boundary-Induced Piezoelectricity in Ultrathin Diamond Membranes

Overturning a century-old material assumption that bulk diamond is non-piezoelectric, researchers fabricated flexible micro-thin polycrystalline diamond membranes. First-principles calculations revealed that mechanical bending induces structural charge asymmetries across internal crystal grain boundaries, producing a strong and repeatable piezoelectric voltage.
